Wet slip, dry slip, or no slip? What You Need to Know About Housing Your Boat

VIP Lake Travis docks

A boat is one of the most costly purchases you’ll make. So it only stands to reason that seeking appropriate housing for your boat becomes a matter of protecting your investment. That being said, the major decision you’ll have to make is whether to choose a wet slip, dry slip, or no slip at all. VIP Marina can help you ascertain which storage method is right for you.

Wet Slips

During the boating season from March through November, the vast majority of boaters want to readily access their watercraft on a moment’s whim to take advantage of Lake Travis. Wet slips can often vary from a simple open dock without protection from the sun’s damaging UV rays, to a covered structure designed to shelter your vessel from the sun and other elements like rain, as well as lake debris and other watercraft.

A covered wet slip allocates for this type of ready-access along with highly desired amenities, including: patrolled security and utilities, showers and restrooms, fresh water access, wide lighted concrete walkways, a ship store and optional Hydrohoist Lifts. Wet slips also come in a wide selection of sizes to accommodate boats of most any magnitude. Notably, our wet slips are located on the deep part of the lake — unlike many others. So when lake levels take a steep drop or rapid rise, you won’t be without access to your boat or utilities as you would with other detached docks.

Dry Slips

A dry slip can be used to store your boat during the off-season months or when not in use for long periods of time. The preferred type of dry slip is an indoor storage unit. It is by far the ultimate in boat protection —aside from bubble wrap and duct tape. However, there are dry boat slips known as a “rack storage” where boats are housed in a slotted tier system; both are confined in a covered and secure structure. However, rack storage requires an over-sized forklift to move the boat in and out of the slip, which means waiting for your boat to be brought down anytime you want to use it. The advantages of dry storage include:

  • Protected from the harsh elements like:

    • Storms

    • Winds

    • Ultraviolet rays

    • Floating and airborne debris

    • Bird droppings

    • Corrosion and growth from moisture and lake organisms

The Bottom Line

While a wet slip affords ready access, it does not provide the type of protection a dry slip does. So if you’re an infrequent boater, then a dry slip might be more appropriate for your needs. If you’re like the majority of boat owners and want to simply climb aboard and leave without sacrificing time, security and the luxuries of daily living, then a VIP Marina wet slip is the perfect fit for you and your boat!
