Boat Rental Etiquette

Boat rentals are a way to enjoy the lake without your own boat, or to ‘try before you buy’ when considering a new boat purchase. There are some important rules to follow and factors to considers when renting:

1. Know what you’re renting. You would think that’s a no-brainer, but you’d be surprised by how quickly a novice can find themselves in deep water trying to maneuver a boat that’s overwhelming for them. Before you book your rental – and most certainly before you pull away from the dock – make sure you’re aware of the mechanics and maneuvering capabilities of the craft. If you’re unsure or you’re trying a new or larger model before purchase, be sure to ask questions.

2. Signs, signs, everywhere signs. It seems like no matter where you go, there are signs telling you what to do and what not to do. But unlike ‘stay off the grass’, waterway signs are designed to keep boaters and swimmers safe, both from seen and unseen hazards. No-wake zones and speed limits should be adhered to for the safety of all boaters – but be especially vigilant for buoys marking channel ways and diving flags alerting you to the presence of swimmers and divers.

3. Sunshine and blue skies. As beautiful as a day on the lake is, we all know that the weather can turn at the drop of a hat. It’s a simple truth that is so easy to overlook – dress for the weather you expect, not the weather you want. So when you’re packing for your rental, make sure to include a complete change of clothes for an unexpected dip, some raingear, and a sweater or light jacket.

4. Not all heads are created equal. Look, no one wants to look like a novice before heading out for a day in the sun, but the simple truth is that not all heads function the same – so before you find yourself in a sticky spot, take a moment and ask how the mechanics of the head work for the particular boat you’re renting.

5. Tips aren’t taboo. When you rent a car, customer service starts and ends at the counter. You haul your own luggage and pump your own fuel – you’re pretty much on your own. This is not so when renting a boat. Transportation for your party and luggage from the parking lot to and from the boat is just the start of the experience. Making sure your tanks are topped off, your rental is sparkling clean, and all essentials are stocked is part of the service. So, just like the bellhop at the hotel – if you’re pleased with the service, tipping is encouraged.

Whether you’re shopping for a new or upgrade, or are planning a special day on the lake, VIP Marina is your go-to for watercraft rentals. From parking lot to dock, our customer service gets you settled and our master mechanics make sure the boats – and you – are ready for the day.
